On / Off Boarding

A core IT task is to onboard and offboard users. It’s a time sink for IT, but it helps new employees become productive quickly and allows admins to disable access to former employees. Too often, the onboarding and offboarding process is manual and tedious. One missed step means, continued access to a resource for a recently departed employee.

The Importance of Onboarding and Offboarding :

The process of onboarding and offboarding of users is now more critical than ever. It’s a thankless job that nobody seems to think about. There aren’t goals around it, people to manage it, or even great processes/technology to support the problem. In fact, it is just one of those items that organizations assume will happen. The good news is that cloud identity management platforms supporting onboarding and offboarding do exist.

For a new user or a departing employee, the process can be highly impactful. A new employee that is greeted with everything that they need to get started being a productive employee has a completely different outlook on their new job and employer than one who struggles through finding the resources that they need through trial and error. For somebody departing, whether it is on positive or negative circumstances, there needs to be a clean break with no access to any IT resources. Not only is it illegal for those users to re-enter their former employee’s network, but it also is a massive security risk for organizations.
